Emergency / Critical Care

Garden State Veterinary Specialists is open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Dr. Katharine Palmer heads the Emergency/Critical Care Service and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency/Critical Care. She became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency/Critical Care in 2001. Kate supervises the critical care cases in the Intensive Care Unit and manages the emergency cases that are referred to our hospital.

Katharine Palmer, DVM
Diplomate ACVIM, ACVECC (Emergency and Critical Care)

A Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine since 1999, Kate is a graduate of the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Palmer completed an internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City and a residency at the University of Pennsylvania's emergency service and intensive care unit with primary responsibility for the unit's cases. Kate became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency & Critical Care in 2001.

Carey Hemmelgarn, DVM
Diplomate ACVECC

Dr. Carey Hemmelgarn received her veterinary degree at Washington State University in 2009 and has been a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC) since 2013. She completed a small animal rotating internship at Garden State Veterinary Specialists followed by a three year residency program in small animal emergency and critical care at Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus, NJ. Dr. Hemmelgarn returned to GSVS staff as an emergency and critical care specialist after finishing her residency in 2013. She is the medical director of Garden State Veterinary Services in Iselin where she also treats emergency patients.

Christina Maglaras, DVM

Dr. Maglaras is a 2010 graduate of Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed an Internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery in 2011 at Garden State Veterinary Specialists . Pursuing her interest in emergency critical care, Christina completed an Internship in Small Animal Emergency Critical Care in 2012 followed by a three year Residency both at the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Maglaras returned to Garden State Veterinary Specialists in 2015 to join our Emergency Critical Care team.

Paul Corrente, DVM

Paul is a 2003 graduate of Ross University. Dr. Corrente completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the Animal Medical Center in New York City in 2003. He joined the Emergency Department at GSVS in 2004.
